RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC) is using its social media clout to help other city departments care for those in need.

RACC often uses social media to raise funds to help injured animals in the city.

But recently, RACC Director Christie Chipps Peters said her officers have encountered people who have a greater need than the animals in their care.

"We’ve worked a few calls involving our senior community and their situations left us wanting to help them as much as we did their animals," she posted on Facebook. "Some of these people have nothing. No family, no guardian, no groceries, or clean clothes, and they can’t walk well enough to use public transportation to get anything they need. Add the restrictions COVID puts on everything and you have a truly heartbreaking life experience."

That is why Peters and RACC are using their social media power to help raise awareness and collect needed items for the Richmond Department of Social Services.

"We're so grateful at Richmond Animal Care and Control to have such incredible community support. And for us to be able to extend that community support to another city department is just really wonderful. And how nice to be able to share the good that we have built in a community of force of love to help another department in need."

So instead of donating gifts and supplies to RACC this Christmas, Peters asked those donations go to Adult Protective Services.

Needed items include:

  • chapstick
  • slippers
  • compression socks
  • towels
  • snuggly blankets
  • coloring books/crossword puzzles
  • kitchen items
  • non-perishable food
  • adult diapers etcDonated items can be dropped off at:RACC 1600 Chamberlayne AvenueRichmond, Va. 23222
