Control continues to sell plenty of copies - but not quite as many as Alan Wake - which was revealed in an earnings report by Remedy Entertainment. Control was released back in August of 2019. It stood out as one of the best games of the year which earned it a Game of the Year nomination at the 2019 Game Awards, among other substantial nominations. For the initial release, Control started with a Deluxe Edition and a Season Pass. The game was also an Epic Games exclusive for the PC platform until August of this year.
New versions of Control have continued to be released after the initial launch of the action-adventure game. The most prominent was the Ultimate Edition that released when Control launched for the first time this year on Steam. A cloud version of Control for the Nintendo Switch was also released, which had long queues for players who wanted to experience the game on the platform first. Going into the next generation, any players who purchase the Ultimate Edition will have access to the game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The next gen edition itself may release sometime in the Spring of 2021.
All the new editions of Control have certainly paid off. During the Capital Market Day presentation from Remedy Entertainment, it was revealed that Control has sold over two million copies. Compared to Alan Wake, which is one of Remedy Entertainment's previous games, a few more copies will need to be sold to catch up. Alan Wake sits at three million total copies sold, which is still a significant amount to gain. However, the good news is that Control appears to be doing better than it ever has before.
In the 15 months since Control launched, November was the strongest month in terms of sales. Remedy Entertainment attributed many factors for the continuous success of Control, which has lead to great earnings for the company. The amount of changing editions and Control's expansions were some of the major factors, like the Ultimate Edition or the Steam release. Continued press for the game, such as the next generation upgrades and the Game Awards coverage have also kept Control in the spotlight. Another interesting metric that Remedy Entertainment revealed was the significance of digital sales. According to the presentation, digital sales accounted for 90 percent of the total sales in 2020.
Though it makes sense, it's still surprising to hear about a game reaching record sales 15 months after launch. It's an impressive feat that was bolstered by the continued released of new editions for the game on multiple platforms. In doing so, Remedy Entertainment managed to keep the game in the media. What makes the story even better is the genuine quality of Control as a game. If the sales keep up, Control could pass Alan Wake in the near future.
Control is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
