Rabbi Shmuel Pewzner, of Chabad-Lubavitch of Harrisburg, lit a giant Menorah on the steps of Pennsylvania’s state capitol at sundown today, Dec. 10, 2020, to mark the start of Hanukkah.

The annual event was moved outdoors to the Capitol steps, and without a crowd, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gov. Tom Wolf pre-recorded a video message for the first night of Hanukkah while quarantining after, first a positive, then a negative test for COVID-19. https://youtu.be/ZAGinprMIUw

Hanukkah, sometimes spelled Chanukah, started at sundown tonight, Dec. 10, and runs through sundown next Friday, Dec. 18.

Hanukkah is a Jewish festival observed by lighting candles (the Capitol Menorah is electric) on a candelabrum called a menorah. Every night one more candle is lit until all eight candles are lit together on the final night of the festival.
