With Fourth of July just around the corner and family and friends eager to gather and celebrate, you may be looking for some alternatives to hot dogs and hamburgers to feed your crew over the holiday weekend. What’s more American than barbecue or a classic clam bake or low country boil? Here’s a look at some of the Port City’s best bets:
Primal BBQ – 1988 Eastwood Road in Lumina Commons
New to the Wilmington barbecue scene, Primal BBQ is wowing customers with burnt ends brisket, whole smoked chickens, Heritage Farms Eastern N.C.-style pulled pork, St. Louis-style ribs and chicken wings. Owner James Romano smokes all the meats on-site at his Lumina Commons restaurant and serves up traditional sides such as Brussels sprouts with bacon, collard greens with ham hock, fried okra, cole slaw, beans, mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. Don’t forget to grab some banana pudding or strawberry shortcake. Primal is known to sell out, so make sure to get your orders in early.
Moe’s Original BBQ – 5818 Oleander Drive
Moe’s offers many of its bestsellers on its “Haul it Home” menu, designed to feed a crowd. The double-wide family pack serves three to four people and includes 1 pound of your choice of meat (pork, turkey or chicken) served with two side pints, a choice of bread and pickles. The triple-wide serves five to six people and includes 1.5 pounds of meat and three side pints. Meats are also sold by the pound, ribs by the rack and smoked wings in packs of 40 or 80. Sides are sold by the pint, half pint and pan. Catering packages are also available, some with a 20-person minimum.
A & G Bar-B-Que & Chicken – 800 S. Lake Park Blvd., Carolina Beach
Not only does A & G serve some delicious pork barbecue, but they have fried chicken as well. To feed a crowd, pork is sold by the pound, and fried chicken is sold in packs of eight. There are also several family meal options that include a variety of sides such as hushpuppies, cole slaw, mashed potatoes with gravy and green beans. Veggies and Brunswick stew are also sold by the pint. See the full menu online.
Topsail Steamer – 530 Causeway Drive, Unit 8, Wrightsville Beach
Topsail steamer offers seven signature Bay Buckets plus a create-your-own option. Each bucket comes with base of red bliss potatoes, corn and a choice of four seasonings, and some include kielbasa and onion as well. Seafood offerings include N.C. shrimp, sea scallops, little neck clams, snow crab, lobster tails and oysters. Cornbread and sweet treats like Key lime and lemon blueberry pie are also available. Order for local pickup online.
Cape Fear Boil Company – 1140 N. Lake Park Blvd. Unit F, Carolina Beach
If you’re looking to feed a crowd without any of the work, Cape Fear Boil Company will come to you with everything you need for your low country boil, taking care of everything from start to finish, including over 25 hand-selected beers. Traditional shrimp boils start at $22.95 per person, plus a catering fee. Cape Fear Boil also offers N.C. pulled pork and barbecue-pulled chicken, potato salad, corn muffins and coleslaw. Pickup is also available for groups of two to 15 people with six custom pots to choose from and plenty of add-ons. For bookings and online orders, visit the boil company's website.
Seaview Crab Company - 6458 Carolina Beach Road, 1515 Marstellar St.
Seaview Crab Company offers both steamed seafood and seafood boils for carryout at its Marstellar Street and Carolina Beach Road locations. With an onsite steamer, the Marstellar Street store can send you on your way with steamed crab legs or a low country boil that’s ready to eat when you walk in the door, but if you choose to pick up from Carolina Beach Road, you will have to steam your selections at home. Boils from either location can be ordered in advance, or customers can walk in and make their selections. Seaview also offers several flavors of peel-and-eat shrimp daily. And announced just last week, Seaview now has a spot at Biggers Market, 6250 Market St., Tuesday through Sunday. View menus and details for all Seaview’s locations online.
