CARROLLTON — An eager crowd attended the 2021 Miss Greene County Fair Pageant after last year’s event was canceled by COVID-19.

Lydia Lansaw was crowned Miss Greene County. Leah Wood was crowned Junior Miss Greene County, and Brooke Thornton was crowned Little Miss Greene County.

Lansaw said she decided only recently to sign up for the pageant, but she still was very happy to have won. Lansaw also sold the most 50/50 tickets and was crowned Miss Congeniality, as voted on by her fellow contestants.

“I decided to do (the pageant) about two months ago,” she said. “But in those two months, it has built up so much suspense. But to finally get down to it was great. I’m so glad I got through it.”

The pageant had 35 candidates: six to be Miss Greene County, 13 for Junior Miss Greene County; and 16 for Little Miss Greene County.

Miss Greene County contestants were from 16 to 21 years old. Junior contestants were from 10 to 12 years old and Little Miss contestants were 5 or 6 years old.

Pageant director Lisa Meisenhiemer said that since the county fair was not held last year, it felt even more special finally to be able to do it again.

“It’s been an interesting year, coming off of a year of not having the pageant,” Meisenheimer said. “It felt extra nervous this year. But we had perfect weather and a great crowd. We got started a little late (to allow all audience members time to park and get seated), but that’s the least of my worries.”

There were three portions of the contest for Miss Greene County; in between each portion, the Junior Miss Greene County and Little Miss Greene County pageants took place. There were question-and-answer portions, short on-stage interviews and, in the Little Miss Greene County Pageant, questions about what they’d like to be when they grow up. Answers ranged from police officer to ballerina to werewolf.

The final portion of the pageant for the Miss Greene County contestants was a question-and-answer session. Contestants came on stage, one at a time, to answer the same question — “What is the biggest impact of the county fair on Greene County?” — which none of them had heard before.

Just before the crowning ceremonies, pageant organizers — dubbed the “Queen’s club” — took the stage and thanked sponsors and benefactors. There also was a short tribute to member Sherryl Trusty Shannon, who died Aug. 22.

Finally came the crowning.

The 2019 winners came up before their respective age group and gave a short speech, thanking Greene County for their time as title-holders and wishing the next winners good fortune.

Ania Goetten, 2019 Miss Greene County, gave a teary-eyed speech and the Miss Greene County contestants took the stage. She thanked her family and Meisenheimer for the support they’d given her.

The Greene County Fair will continue through Saturday.
