The smell of cotton candy.
The sound of children gleefully screaming on a carnival ride.
It’s been a long time.
Carnivals, outdoor concerts, parades, fireworks displays and other summer traditions are back after a one-year hiatus because of the coronavirus.
A giddy, sizable and maskless crowd greeted a summer that is, for the most part, back to normal, at opening night of the Lake Orion Jubilee on Thursday, June 24.
“We’re super, super happy,” said Angela Corral of Lake Orion, as her two young sons slid down a giant slide. “For them, it’s so good to be out.”
Corral said her family “were the people who stayed in” and followed the recommendations on gathering with others during the pandemic.
Corral’s husband, Francisco, said the family was not apprehensive about being out with a large crowd. He said being vaccinated gives him and his wife the confidence to step out and feel safe.
The festival, which goes through Sunday in downtown Lake Orion, includes rides, games and concessions, but no beer tent or live entertainment.
The event benefits the Lake Orion Lions Club, which posted on its social media that, “We couldn’t plan the beer tent because it required too much cash outlay before we knew what the virus situation would be. As a charity, we couldn’t take that hit to our budget.”
Just a month ago, many area Memorial Day parades and other events were not held because of the pandemic. It was the second year for cancellations of that holiday’s observances.
Parents at the Lake Orion Jubilee say it’s especially beneficial for children to be outside and interact with others.
“It’s been challenging, for sure,” said Tom Beaton of Lake Orion, who attended the fair with his two children. “It’s the same thing every day — no new people except on the computer.”
