Dolphins camp: Ramsey appears, Elliott exercises control; plus stock up, stock down - South Florida Sun Sentinel

MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins left tackle Terron Armstead, who had been sidelined due to offseason knee surgery, returned to the practice field Tuesday, the same day All Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who had knee surgery Friday, appeared on the field on crutches before practice.

Armstead stretched with the team but didn’t participate in practice. Still, his presence was felt as he was seen counseling players before and after drills, as usual.

Ramsey, who sustained his injury in Thursday’s second practice of training, hung around his fellow defensive backs for the first part of practice. Fans, upon seeing Ramsey on the field, broke into a “Ja-len! Ja-len!” chant.

The last 20 minutes of practice were moved to the indoor facility because of heavy rain and lightning. Fans were forced to leave the stands at Baptist Health Training Complex after the lightning alarm sounded.

Despite the inclement weather, which was a welcome break from the searing heat of the previous two practices, the offense and defense had an evenly-matched day.

The passing combination of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle had its best collective day of training camp, and Tagovailoa had his best individual day, while the defensive front seven continued making plays, led by edge rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips.

Early in practice it seemed the Dolphins worked the intermediate and deep passing game, and late in practice the focus shifted to a downfield drive that saw Tagovailoa and fellow quarterbacks Mike White and Skylar Thompson take snaps.

Wednesday is an off day. Players are back on the field Thursday and Friday before Saturday’s controlled intrasquad scrimmage at Hard Rock Stadium.

Observations

Safety DeShon Elliott would have lit up fullback Alec Ingold on a deep pass from Tagovailoa late in practice. Granted, Elliott might have been flagged and fined for taking the shot in a game but in a post-practice interview Elliott, the five-year veteran, noted he’s been fined before and hinted he might have made the play in a game. Said Elliott: “If it was anybody else I’d have put him to sleep.” …

Running back Chris Brooks, the undrafted rookie from BYU, had a dazzling 95-yard touchdown run on the final play of practice in the indoor facility. There’s a chance Brooks might have been caught around the 20-yard line by undrafted rookie cornerback Ethan Bonner, who sped over from the other side of the field, but we’re giving Brooks the touchdown. …

Offensive line had its second consecutive day of good showings in one-on-ones against the defensive line. Among the standouts were right/left tackle Cedric Ogbuehi, guard Liam Eichenberg, tackle Kendall Lamm, and lineman Kion Smith. Defensively, lineman Christian Wilkins was his normal wrecking ball self. …

Hill and Waddle, who seem to be ramping up their effectiveness, had their best day as individuals and as a duo Tuesday. Neither had a dropped pass and both had success on short, intermediate and deep routes. …

For the second consecutive day, Hill didn’t line up across from newly-acquired cornerback Eli Apple, who had a low-key day in limited action as he presumably gets more familiar with the defense. …

Right tackle Austin Jackson, whose name hasn’t been called much for positive or negative reasons, took Phillips to the ground on one play in the indoor practice facility. Jackson, who is being eyed suspiciously after his uneven play so far in his career, has been OK through six practices. …

Defensive lineman Zach Sieler made a nice move on center Connor Williams and tackled running back Salvon Ahmed for no gain in 11-on-11 midway through practice. Sieler is having a nice training camp. …

Offensive tackle James Tunstall, the undrafted rookie from Cincinnati, seems to be making incremental progress but he’s a longshot to make the 53-man roster regular-season roster. …

Wide receiver Erik Ezukanma had another decent showing Tuesday. He didn’t do anything especially well but was solid. Ezukanma probably remains in a fight for playing time among a crew that has Hill, Waddle and Braxton Berrios as certainties and River Cracraft as a near-certainty for playing time. …

Rookie cornerback Cam Smith had a nice pass breakup against Ezukanma. Smith has been consistent at getting his hands on passes throughout training camp.

Injury report

Overall, Tuesday was a good day on the injuries front. Running back Jeff Wilson Jr., who missed Monday’s practice with an undisclosed ailment, returned with a sleeve on his right leg. Wilson did individual drills but no team drills.

Armstead returned to the field, albeit on a very limited basis, and safety Brandon Jones (knee) and cornerback Trill Williams (knee) participated in 11-on-11 on a very limited basis. Jones was only noticed on the field for one play, and Williams might have played two snaps. But it represents progress.

Cornerback Nik Needham (knee) and tight end Tanner Conner (undisclosed ailment) remain on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

Safety Bennett Williams, the undrafted rookie from Oregon, wasn’t seen on the practice field.

Stock up

OT Ryan Hayes. The rookie seventh-round pick from Michigan did a nice job in his repetitions, successfully blocking linebackers Andrew Van Ginkel and Cam Goode. Hayes had been low-profile in training camp but seemed to have a breakout day Tuesday.

Stock down

DL Raekwon Davis. The 2021 second-round pick hasn’t been impressive so far. It’s only six practices, but against what some consider a suspect interior offensive line (center Williams, left guard Eichenberg, right guard Robert Hunt), Davis hasn’t yet consistently made his presence felt.
