Stevie Nicks enchants Houston crowd with classic songs and stories - Houston Chronicle

Stevie Nicks told as many stories as songs she sang Saturday night at Toyota Center.

The Fleetwood Mac icon told the crowd she'd been in Houston "a couple of days" with her dog Lily, who was backstage. Nicks, 75, got the Chinese crested six years ago in Houston. She brought her onstage during a November show at the Woodlands Pavilion.

She introduced "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" as "a gift from a really close friend of mine," the late Tom Petty. They met for the first time recording the song and remained friends until his death in 2017.

She dedicated "Soldier's Angel," originally written after a visit to Walter Reed, to Ukraine. Images of war flashed on the large screens as she performed.

"Remember Ukraine. Don't forget about it. Because if we forget about it, what's coming next is so much worse," Nicks said.

But Nicks' most revealing story had nothing to do with music. She introduced the protest song "For What it's Worth" by urging the crowd to vote in every election — then admitted she only did it for the first time when she was 70, "or older."

"I was on the road. I didn't want to do jury duty. I didn't want to be pulled off the road and have to tell Lindsey (Buckingham)," Nicks said.

Nicks kicked off her nearly two-hour show with solo song "Outside the Rain" blending seamlessly into Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams." She's still sprightly and spirited onstage, interacting with her band and shifting into her signature spins. She showed off a pair of her original shawls from the '80s, a Nicks wardrobe staple that many women in the crowd emulated, along with top hats and long, black skirts.

"If Anyone Falls" was a hard-charging highlight. "Gypsy" still weaves a lyrical spell, buoyed by gorgeous accompaniment. She introduced "I Sing for the Things" as one of her favorite songs, originally recorded for the "Bella Donna" album. It ended up on the subsequent "Wild Heart" album, and Nicks added it to the setlist to ensure it didn't get "lost."

"Stand Back" and "Edge of Seventeen," two of Nicks' biggest solo hits, reenergized the crowd and spurred those who were seated to their feet. A pair of homages — Petty's "Free Fallin'" and a poignant "Landslide" for Christine McVie — closed the show and sent the crowd up the aisles (and into the still-oppressive Houston heat) in a bittersweet mood.

"This is what we're all meant to do," Nicks said. "Go to a concert and have fun and save the world with music."
