Bayonne is finally moving forward with its trap, neuter, and release (TNR) program.
The move comes after the Bayonne City Council approved the renewal of the city’s animal control contract with NJ Humane Society. Based in West New York, the organization run by Geoffrey Santini offers animal control and rescue services and owns a no-kill shelter at 6412 Dewey Avenue.
Since last year, the city has been eyeing a TNR program operated by Santini and the NJ Humane Society. However, there were issues with the location to operate the program out of and the need to get all the feral cat rescues in Bayonne on board. Now it seems those issues have been remedied.
“Geoffrey Santini of NJ Humane Society has provided me with an overview of how he believes he can best effectuate the TNR program,” Law Director Jay Coffey said at the April 13 council caucus meeting.
While the city was previously thinking of using the old boathouse at end of the parking lot at 16th Street Park which was used for cat-related needs, there are some issues with the building. It does not have heat or water, but does have electricity.
However, the resolution did not clarify where the location would be. But the resolution would increase NJ Humane Society’s contract with the city by $25,000 and allow the operation of the TNR program.
“We approved a contract for animal control in September or October of last year, and this is modifying the contract to include a trap, neuter, and release program,” Coffey said.
The resolution was moved by City Council President Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski, and seconded by seconded by Third Ward City Councilman Gary La Pelusa. La Pelusa previously advocated for and secured an additional $5,000 for the program in the 2021 budget.
The resolution for the TNR program will be up for final passage at the next meeting of the council. The Bayonne City Council will meet on April 20 at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall at 630 Avenue C. For more information, go to bayonnenj.org.
