Overall attendance at the 2021 New York State Fair continues to be well below pre-Covid numbers, but big crowds are still coming out for concerts.

REO Speedwagon drew 30,511 fans to Chevy Park on Wednesday night, the 10th largest concert audience in NYS Fair history. Only 12 other concerts have topped 30,000 attendees at the Fair.

Total Fair attendance Wednesday was only slightly higher — 37,591 — or half as many people as the first Wednesday of the 2019 NYS Fair. The Fair is averaging just over 38,000 visitors daily this year, and is currently on pace to bring in 685,000 people over 18 days — well below 2019′s record 1.33 million visitors over a shorter 13-day run.

REO Speedwagon’s crowd still shouldn’t be too surprising. The classic rock band sold more than 40 million records in their five decades-long run, including hits like “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” “Take It On the Run” and “Keep On Loving You.”

This photo provided by the New York State Fair shows fans cheering for REO Speedwagon at Chevy Park on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2021.

Fun fact: REO Speedwagon’s original drummer Alan Gratzer was born in Syracuse. Gratzer left the band in 1988 and retired from music, but briefly reunited with singer Kevin Cronin and the current lineup in Sacramento in 2019.

REO Speedwagon’s crowd also sets a new record for the largest in Chevy Park’s short history, and bumps Train’s concert Tuesday from the list of the 15 biggest NYS Fair concert crowds of all time. Train drew 28,563 people, now the 16th biggest concert ever at the NYS Fair.

Chevy Park, formerly known as the New York Experience Stage, is now hosting the Fair’s bigger concerts instead of Chevy Court. Chevy Park has five times as much space and a larger stage that can handle requirements of modern concert tours, such as extensive lighting setups, sound systems and video walls.

Other upcoming big Chevy Park concerts include The Beach Boys on Saturday (Aug. 28), Nelly on Sept. 1, Third Eye Blind on Sept. 2, and Cheap Trick on Labor Day (Sept 6).
