Saturday’s benefit softball event in hour of Champaign Police Officer Chris Oberheim was a roaring success on a hot, humid afternoon and evening.  Danville Stadium was packed with people – a crowd estimated at more than 5,000 people.

Officer Chris Oberheim lost his life while on duty this past May. He was also known for his love for softball, and for coaching.  After Champaign’s police officers defeated Danville’s in the opening game, Oberheim’s wife Amber, who coached the Champaign Police to victory, said she had expected a successful day, but was still very much overwhelmed….

Also competing during the three game event was a team of police officers from Decatur.  Law enforcement personnel and supporters were everywhere.  And Vermilion County Sheriff Pat Hartshorn said the entire day showed the truth about how law enforcement is respected locally and statewide….

Proceeds from Saturday’s event went to Peacemaker Project 703, a non-profit organization established by Oberheim’s family for the support of police officers and their families.
