Payment Processing System Crashes at Allegiant Stadium, Petco Park
By
Credit card payment processing company TSYS had a nationwide system outage on Saturday that resulted in at least two cashless sporting venues, Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and Petco Park in San Diego, being unable to accept payment from fans trying to buy food and drinks.
The outage occurred while Allegiant Stadium hosted about 50,000 fans for WWE’s SummerSlam event and MLB’s San Diego Padres played the Philadelphia Phillies at Petco Park. With the concessions ill-equipped to process cash transactions, both venues decided to offer fans free food and soft drinks—but not alcohol—while TSYS, a subsidiary of Global Payments, was offline. Shift4, a payment processor, acknowledged the outage
“We are aware of a nationwide processing outage at TSYS, one of the largest payment platforms in the country. This outage is impacting some of our customers and many other payments providers. We are in close contact with TSYS to facilitate a resolution as quickly as possible,” Shift4 tweeted on Saturday.
The system was fixed in time for Sunday’s game at Petco Park, with the Padres offering fans who attended Saturday’s game a $15 concessions credit to be used at any home game for the remainder of the season.
It’s becoming the norm for stadiums to ban cash in a COVID-19 world, with even this year’s Super Bowl going cashless. But to cash’s credit, it never runs out of batteries or pops an error message on screens. We call it King for a reason.
Technical difficulties are a rare but inevitable part of digital systems, so perhaps the official U.S. currency shouldn’t be completely eradicated from venues.ApplePay, Venmo and GooglePay are great, but Washingtons, Lincolns, Hamiltons, and Benjamins won’t ever let you down.
