A large crowd entered a concert without tickets at the St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview on Friday night, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

Sgt. Jon Seeber said a large number of people pushed toward security shortly after the gates opened for Pitbull and Iggy Azalea’s performance at the St. Joe’s Amp. Officials were forced to open the gates for safety concerns, Seeber said.

A video posted on Facebook by Syracuse radio station Hot 107.9 (WWHT-FM) apparently shows the crowd walking past the gates toward the venue. Its sister station, NewsRadio 570 WSYR, was first to report that a large crowd bypassed the gates without tickets.

One security official described the lawn crowd as “a bit unruly.” Several ambulances waited in the parking lot after the show.

It’s unclear how many people entered the amphitheater without tickets.

Azalea, best known for the rap hit “Fancy,” said on Twitter that attendance was 17,000. It would be near a sellout crowd and possibly the largest show at the Amp this summer; capacity at the Amp is 17,500.

“Woooooooo 17,000 people! The biggest crowd yet - Thanks again @pitbull for having me I’m having so much fun,” she tweeted.

According to a syracuse.com reporter, most of the crowd skewed young, with lots of high school and college-age concertgoers on the lawn. The high-octane performance featured plenty of dancing and hyper-speed rapping by Pitbull, whose hits include “Culo,” “Toma,” “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho),” “Hotel Room Service,” “Give Me Everything,” “Don’t Stop the Party,” “Feel This Moment” and “Timber.”

Officials at Onondaga County, Westcott Events, and ASM Global did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Amp is owned by the county and operated by ASM Global, previously known as SMG; Westcott Events provides security for the venue, previously known as the Lakeview Amphitheater.

The amphitheater recently installed metal detectors at the gates. Fans at the James Taylor-Jackson Browne concert on Sunday complained that the security/bag check process took up to an hour for people to enter the concert, forcing people into a crowded space with close contact despite Covid-19 concerns.

The next major concert scheduled at the St. Joe’s Amp is Foo Fighters on Sept. 15.
