Syracuse felt extra “Fancy” on Friday night when Iggy Azalea and Mr. Worldwide himself drew a massive crowd at their show on the Onondaga Lake shore.
Pitbull headlined the St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview as part of his “I Feel Good” tour. “Fancy” rapper Iggy Azalea opened the show at 8 p.m.
Iggy kicked off her show saying she had missed seeing crowds as big as this one. She later tweeted that attendance hit 17,000, a near sell-out crowd. (Capacity at the Amp is 17,500.) Lakeview security said this was the largest show at the Amp so far this summer.
The Syracuse crowd skewed young, with plenty of high school and college-aged concertgoers filling the lawn. Some wore masks at the outdoor venue, but most did not. One security official described the lawn crowd as “a bit unruly.” Several ambulances waited in the parking lot after the show.
Many fans entered the concert without tickets, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office. Sgt. Jon Seeber said a large number of people pushed toward security shortly after the gates opened. Officials were forced to open the gates for safety concerns.
The high-octane performance featured plenty of dancing, crowd interaction and hyper-speed rapping over backing tracks. Both Iggy and Pitbull brought buckets of energy, along with their talented dance crews.
The crowd screamed and danced along to hit after hit from Pitbull, who previously performed at the New York State Fair’s former Grandstand in 2014. He’s known for reggaeton and rap hits like “Culo,” “Toma,” “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho),” “Hotel Room Service,” “Give Me Everything,” “Don’t Stop the Party,” “Feel This Moment” and “Timber.”
He became an ownership partner of NASCAR team Trackhouse Racing and is releasing his 12th studio album later this year.
Iggy Azalea (born Amethyst Amelia Kelly) is an Australian rapper best known for the 2014 smash hit “Fancy” (feat. Charli XCX), plus the songs “Black Widow” (feat. Rita Ora), “Pretty Girls” (with Britney Spears) and “Problem” (with Ariana Grande).
She opened her 40-minute set with “Work,” “Iam [sic] The Stripclub” and “Sally Walker.” She thanked the crowd often for being kind and welcoming, and hyped up the fans to scream so Pitbull could hear them backstage.
Pitbull and Iggy Azalea will also perform on Sept. 3 at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.
The next major concert scheduled at the St. Joe’s Amp is Foo Fighters on Sept. 15, 2021.
