A street sale designed to give Oakmont businesses and other vendors boost returned to the borough and so did the crowds.

More than 1,200 people were estimated to have walked and shopped up and down Allegheny River Boulevard on July 31 in the return of the annual Oakmont Chamber of Commerce event.

“We had a great Street Sale,” chamber Director Karen DeTurck said. “Everything went very smooth. The vendors that I spoke to said they did really well. The crowd was pretty large but I’m terrible at speculating how many.

”I’m guessing it was around 1,200 to 1,500 people. The weather was spectacular, which helped add to the large crowd.:

DeTurck said more than 100 vendors plied their wares. There were glass, soap and candle vendors and ice carving demonstrations by Rich Bubin of Ice Creations.

The street sale’s major sponsor is Greater Pitt Tree Service.

The event was canceled last year due to the pandemic. Organizers hope to make up for lost time by offering more activities than ever before.

The Street Sale also gave Castle Toys and Games an opportunity to showcase its special room for parties. It was off limits for more than a year due to the pandemic. The shop hosted Superman, and Disney’s Rapunzel and Moana.

“They were a big hit,” co-owner Jeff Lyden said. “It was a good event. With covid we haven’t really had many opportunities (to use the room). We’re beginning to book parties again.”

He commended DeTurck and other volunteers for helping bring people to the borough.

“They work hard and they do it right,” Lyden said. “We participate in everything that the chamber does because it’s good for the group.”

Castle Toys is a chamber member.

The event area was split in two to make room for vendors and a car cruise.

DeTurck said she hopes the Street Sale’s success will carry over into other events.

The next chamber event is the Aug. 20 Night Market in the old Oakmont Bakery parking lot along Allegheny Avenue.

There will be crafters, live music and more from 5-9 p.m.

A Halloween parade and Fall Festival is being planned for Oct. 30.
