TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. — A stingray is alive and swimming in the ocean thanks to police and beachgoers in Tybee Island.

A Tybee Island police officer was called to the beach near Lighthouse Point in reference to a stranded stingray.

When he arrived, beachgoers told him that they found the stingray in thick sand but pulled it into some shallow water where it could rest. When the officer began to assess the stingray’s condition, a small crowd began to gather.

But the crowd wasn’t there to gawk or cause any trouble, they began to work together to get the stingray to safety.

Police said a family with small children gathered buckets of ocean water to pour over the stingray to keep it wet and comfortable. A short time later, a man stepped forward and helped the officer carry the stingray to deeper water, where it was able to swim free.

Tybee Island police said it’s thankful for the people who helped during that situation.

“While it may seem like a small deal to some, your willingness to help proved that we can do great things when we work TOGETHER,” the police department wrote on Facebook.
