RAPID CITY, S.D. — After 45 years at the YMCA, Roger Gallimore is retiring. Roger says the ‘Y’ has been a great fit for him and loves the mission of bringing the community together.

The YMCA serves as a community, multi-use facility and for Roger Gallimore, it’s home away from home.

Roger states, “So that is unheard of spending 45 years (at one job), I used to read about people like that and wonder how in the world do they do that and now here I am wondering where in the world did the time go,” says Roger.

He began working at the Y in 1976 part time as a college student, working with kids in the after-school program.

He went on to become the Youth and Outreach Director and eventually the Executive Director. Roger credits the collaboration of community, staff and volunteers to the success on the Y.

“It’s really not about a person, it’s about the whole community – this is something that the whole community can be proud of,” adds Roger.

Over the years, Roger created the Y Kids Campaign, ensuring that any and all families could take advantage of the amenities.

Roger says, “So I can see directly where the dollars go, I can tell how it touches individual kids lives. And we’ve seen such amazing things happen with kids over the years.”

He even met his wife working at the ‘Y’ years ago, when she was a volunteer.

Roger and his wife plan on taking a six month sabbatical to refresh and then look at options and causes they want to support, but say the ‘Y’ will always be a place they will be a part of.

Roger says, “The YMCA, we’ve joked over the years, is a lot like the Hotel California, check out anytime you want, but you can never leave.”

His signature mustache earned him the nickname ‘Captain Mustache.’

To honor Roger and his wife Eileen, the YMCA has created the Roger & Eileen Gallimore Endowment Fund to benefit the youth in Rapid City for years to come.
