April 20, 2021 -- You couldn’t say University of Alabama fans packed Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday for the annual spring football scrimmage. After all, seating was limited to 50% because of the COVID pandemic.

Still, 47,218 people attended the game, making it the biggest U.S. sports crowd since the beginning of the pandemic, Yahoo Sports reported.

Other sporting events have drawn big crowds while observing some form of social distancing, but none this big.

The Texas Rangers lifted most restrictions for their home opener and only had about 38,000 fans. The Super Bowl had restrictions and had about 25,000 fans to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, which can seat about 65,000 people maximum. Most Major League Baseball teams allow less than 30% capacity for games.

Bryant-Denny Stadium can hold 101,821 fans, according to the school website, so the school missed hitting the 50% mark for the game.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey recently signed the statewide “Safer Apart” order, which doesn’t mandate face masks but encourages people to wear them in public and in close contact with others.
