MINNEAPOLIS (KTTC) -- Many who spent the last year calling for justice for George Floyd celebrated the guilty verdict for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin Tuesday night.
They gathered outside Cup Foods at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis. The area has become known to many as George Floyd Square. It's where Floyd drew his last breaths.
The atmosphere Tuesday night was like a family reunion with dancing, fireworks, musicians and DJs.
George Floyd's brother along with Rev. Jesse Jackson visited in the evening and spoke to the crowd.
"I didn't expect him to get found guilty. I was expecting not guilty," said one man at the gathering. "It's just how it's always played out in the United States, when a cop kills a black person, it just always plays out where they get found not guilty or they get acquitted or they get a real small charge."
Many said they'll always remember where they were when they heard the verdict.
