NORMAL, Ill. – Saturday morning's scrimmage marked the halfway point for Illinois State during its spring workouts, although weather conditions certainly didn't feel like that at Hancock Stadium as the Redbirds were met by chilly temperatures and strong winds that forced wind chills into the high teens.
Scrimmage Notes:
• The scrimmage was just over 100 plays, with each of the three units getting time to take the field.
• Situations practiced included coming off the endzone, driving the field and two separate red zone sessions.
• The wind, which was gusting at over 25 miles per hour throughout, made it very difficult for the Redbird quarterback to find receivers in the passing game, which resulted in nearly 70 rushing attempts by Redbird backs.
• The defense was able to rack up some impressive numbers, with 14 sacks (quarterbacks were not live and considered down on first touch) and 22 tackles-for-loss.
Scoring Summary:
• The defense scored the first points of the scrimmage, as the offense was attempting to come off its own end zone from the two-yard line … Zeke Vandenburgh tallied the safety in the endzone on a sack to give the defense two points on the scoreboard.
• The next 12 points all came off the leg of redshirt freshman placekicker Ian Wagner, who connected on field goals of 30, 51, 40, and 28 yards on a very difficult day to kick at Hancock Stadium.
• The day's lone touchdown came on a one-yard run by Pha'leak Brown in the final red zone session for the first-team offense.

• Braydon Deming: 6 tackles, 2 sacks, 2.5 TFL
• Zeke Vandenburgh: 5 tackles, 3 sacks, 3.0 TFL, 1 safety
• Nick Kessler: 5 tackles, 3 sacks, 3.0 TFL
