BOSTON — There was plenty of speculation on whether Ray Allen would attend Kevin Garnett’s jersey retirement Sunday, but those questions were quickly answered pregame. Allen was in attendance for Sunday’s game against the Mavericks and was shown on the video board, garnering plenty of cheers from the crowd.
The video board first showed Garnett then panned to Allen before finishing off with Paul Pierce to complete the former Big 3.
It’s been an icy decade or so since Allen, who played for the Celtics from 2007-12, signed with the rival Heat in free agency. There was some longstanding beef between Allen and Garnett, while others like Pierce have rekindled the friendship. But it seems that animosity has cooled, which started at the All-Star festivities when Allen and Garnett were seen taking pictures together for the NBA’s 75th anniversary honors.
The Celtics are retiring Garnett’s No. 5 jersey Sunday as plenty of former players were in attendance. Pierce, Kendrick Perkins and others were just the few Celtics in attendance for Sunday’s game. It’s been a weekend of festivities on that front as the team also honors the 2008 NBA championship team that featured the Celtics’ Big 3.
