GAINESVILLE, Texas (KXII) - A protest in Gainesville Sunday night drew a large crowd again calling for the removal of a Confederate monument.

Organizers say more than 100 people marched from BP Douglas Park to the Cooke County Courthouse near the statue.

It’s the fourth protest organized by the group PRO Gainesville, who say they marched for racial injustice.

Gainesville Police Chief Kevin Phillips says around 40 people were there to counter protest.

He says it remained mostly peaceful, but members of both parties carried guns, including shot guns and assault rifles.

There was a heavy law enforcement presence with Gainesville police, the Cooke County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers.

According to an agenda, county commissioners are scheduled to consider any action regarding the monument in two weeks.
