BUCYRUS - The joy of winning came to a handful of Crawford County senior citizens Friday afternoon in downtown Bucyrus.

They collected dozens of prizes during a bingo event held at the Crawford County Council on Aging.

"Bingo is one of our most popular activities," said Courtney Moody, the organization's activities coordinator. "I think everyone was excited to be able to play again and get together."

The event was limited to 20 people. Participants were asked to sit outside in seats that were spaced several feet from one another.

The organization's main office is still closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the closure, the senior citizens have seen one another several times this summer.

"I've been trying to do one outdoor event every week," Moody said.

Bingo is so popular that Moody had to turn some seniors away who wanted to play. She put them on a waiting list, though, in case there were any cancellations.

"I-28," Moody shouted as a cicada serenaded the audience under the sultry August sun.

"BINGO!" one lady shouted.

She walked to a table to collect her winnings.

Prizes including pot holders, bags of candy, cookie decorates and various other household supplies were all sponsored by the Crawford County Council on Aging.

"Except for the flowers," Moody said. "Those were donated by Norton's Flowers."

That flower pot filled with large Black Eyed Susans as the main prize of the afternoon.

The flower shop also joined Petzone Kennels, Doug Bear Rentals as well as four individuals to sponsor sandwich vouchers for seniors who attended the event.

"That was a total of $315 donated to sponsor 45 sandwiches," Moody said.

The remaining sandwich vouchers will be given away as prizes in later events.

Seniors took their vouchers to Saum's Bratty Wagon, based out of Carey, which was parked in the organization's parking lot throughout the afternoon.

Several people from the community who were not there to play bingo also visited to purchase a few bratwursts.

Moody was particularly happy to have two volunteers on hand to help throughout the event.

"They were so helpful and so awesome," she said. "I really couldn't have gotten through the event without them."

The next event will be a tie-dye and outdoor games day that begins 1 p.m. Tuesday. Activities will be complete by 4 p.m. at the latest.

Everyone is invited to the outdoor games, but the tie-dye event will be limited to 12 participants. To register, call 419-562-3050, option 4.

"People can bring their own items to tie-dye," Moody said. "I will provide a white cotton face mask that everyone can tie-dye."
