Israel has conveyed its intention to regain control of the Philadelphi Corridor along the Egypt-Gaza border, The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday. Israeli and Egyptian officials confirmed that Israel aims to take back control of the corridor, which it managed until September 2005 following the disengagement from Gaza.
Earlier in the week, The Journal revealed that Israel was exerting pressure on Egypt to address Hamas’s smuggling operations in the Philadelphi Corridor. The report outlined Israel’s desire to implement warning systems along the border, enabling real-time alerts about potential efforts by the terrorist organization to reconstruct smuggling tunnels — a significant channel for weapons entering Gaza.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has consistently stressed the importance of Israeli control over the Philadelphi Corridor in recent weeks, asserting that it must be in Israeli hands and closed to counteract Hamas’s smuggling activities. According to the report, Israeli authorities have informed Cairo about an upcoming military operation along the Gaza side of the Philadelphi Corridor. The operation aims to remove Palestinian elements from a central passage in the route and position IDF soldiers along its southeast part, bordering both Israel and Egypt, toward the Mediterranean Sea.
The Philadelphi Corridor, spanning 15 kilometers, serves as a buffer zone between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. Established in early 1982 after the transfer of the Sinai Peninsula to Egyptian control, the corridor has become crucial for terrorist organizations, which use it frequently for arms smuggling through tunnels.
