EARLIER THIS YEAR, in atrend that swept TikTok, men were asked how often they think about the Roman Empire. For many, the answer was multiple times a week, suggesting an incomprehensible male obsession with Rome’s imperial period. My reaction to this recurring response: “Only a few times a week?”

I’ve made so many trips to Rome, for pleasure and to research books on its history, that I’ve often wondered if I had run out of ancient sites to visit. Accordingly, on a recent trip, I asked three local experts to take me to their favorite secret spots that most vividly bring history to life.
