ESPN analyst Jay Williams didn't walk away from Coleman Coliseum impressed Tuesday.
On the call for the game between Alabama basketball and Clemson as part of the ACC/SEC challenge, the former Duke and Chicago Bulls point guard ripped the crowd in Tuscaloosa.
"What's the point of playing at home if it's not going to have a home court advantage?" Williams said. "This doesn't feel like a home court advantage at all for Alabama. The place is not packed. The fans don't seem to be engaged. It seems to be more like a tennis match. By the way, Clemson has been taking the air out of the building."
The way Alabama played probably didn't help. The Crimson Tide played flat offensively in the first half then floundered defensively in the second to lose to Clemson 85-77. Attendance was listed at 10,725.
Another thing working against a strong environment were the logistics of the game. Weekday games don't draw the biggest crowds, and it was not only a weekday game but also a game that started at 8:30 p.m.
Oats, who praised the student section postgame, was asked about Williams' saying it sounded like a tennis match.
“At times I’m sure it did," Oats said. “They called the timeout, I heard the crowd was great at times. We got to give them something to cheer about to be honest with you.”
