State lawmakers are expected to pass a bill that will grant Mayor Eric Adams control over the city's schools for another two years, according to sources.
“I’m sure, as in all negotiations with multiple parties that nobody is 100% happy with the final outcome," Assenbky education commitee chair Michael Benedetto said Tuesday. "As in all cases, there are people who are little annoyed, but for the most part people are satisfied.”
Since 2002, Albany has regularly granted New York City mayors full control of the public school system, but some legislators delayed renewing that control this year, expressing that they would like to see parents have greater input.
Sources said the measure is expected to include that change.
The bill will give the New York City mayor control of public schools through 2024, less than what both Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul had pushed for.
Mayoral control of schools is currently set to expire on June 30.
In a statement Michael Mulgrew — president of the United Federation of Teachers, the city's public school teachers union — said the proposed legislation "will increase parental involvement in the governance of our public schools, and will guarantee more independence for the members of the Panel for Educational Policy - both important priorities for the city's teachers."
