PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio — Police in Put-in-Bay had to call other law-enforcement agencies Saturday night for help, including a SWAT unit, after multiple fights broke out in a crowd of nearly 20,000 people, reports say.

WTOL Channel 11 reports that Put-in-Bay Police Chief James Kimble called for the Ottawa County SWAT to help regain control of the crowd. Kimble also requested help from the sheriff’s departments in Erie County and Sandusky County, and also asked Port Clinton police to send personnel, the Sandusky Register reports.

WTOL reports about 30 SWAT members from the three counties responded to the island.

Ottawa County Sheriff Stephen Levorchick tells WTOL that security personnel with the Jet Express ferry service told deputies they were worried they were about to lose control of the dock.

“We hadn’t even left the Jet Express dock before we were called to a fight,” Levorchick tells the Register. “It was fight after fight after fight for a little while.”

By the time it was all done, multiple fights had been broken up but only two people were arrested by deputies, WTVG Channel 13 reports. Levorchick says deputies did help Put-in-Bay police with several other arrests.

“It was a mess,” Kimble tells WTVG.
