ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI – After a firework landed in a crowd at a Fourth of July celebration, city officials said they are committed to improving safety moving forward.
Allegan city officials shed some light on Tuesday, July 4, about a fireworks mishap that caused a gathered crowd to panic.
The incident happened Monday night during fireworks display at the community’s annual July 3 Jubilee celebration. The firework show is organized and launched by Wolverine Fireworks Display, Inc., city officials said in a statement.
The city contracts with the company and utilizes pontoon boats in the Kalamazoo River for the main fireworks show and finale that launches south of M-89. The fireworks launch about 90 feet from a pedestrian boardwalk.
During Monday’s firework display, part of a firework from the show unintentionally landed in a crowd located to the east of one of the pontoon boats.
That resulted in a “handful” of minor injuries, officials said. City officials did not say how many people were injured, but noted all but one person was treated at the scene.
One individual was transported to Helen Devos Children’s Hospital for further evaluation.
“The city of Allegan and the Allegan Fire District are dedicated to ensuring and improving the safety of all eventgoers,” City Manager Joel Dye said in a statement.
MLive/The Grand Rapids Press obtained video footage from one woman in attendance that shows some of the fireworks being shot into the gathered crowd.
The short clip shows people as they watch fireworks go into the sky and explode. Then, a large firework goes off into the crowd as people can be seen yelling and running from the flying sparks.
Allegan police have yet to release further details about the incident.
