Nearly one year after tragedy struck two local communities, the man who pleaded guilty to killing his mother and driving through a crowd at a Berwick fundraiser, was sentenced Tuesday in Cambria County, according to news sources.
Adrian Oswald Sura Reyes, 25, will spend the rest of his life in prison. He was sentenced to two life sentences without the possibility of parole for first-degree murder, in addition to 123 1/2 to 380 years in state prison for 19 counts of attempted first-degree murder, according to reports from WBRE/WYOU and Fox56.
“All of those are cumulative and will run consecutively which I believe is good to honor each and every victim of this tragic event,” said Daniel Lynn, Assistant District Attorney of Columbia County to WBRE/WYOU.
In court, the crimes he committed were said to be the result of “pure evil,” while victims called him a “real-life monster.”
On Aug. 13, 2022, Sura Reyes drove his car through a crowd of people in a parking lot at a Berwick, Cambria County, fundraiser, which was held to raise money for the victims of a fatal fire that killed 10 people just eight days prior.
As a result, 19 people were seriously injured, and 50-year-old Rebecca Reese of Wilkes-Barre was killed, according to reports.
Sura Reyes then drove to his house in Nescopek and murdered his mother, Rosa Reyes, by striking her with a car and then brutally beating her to death with a hammer, according to reports.
Sura Reyes confessed to the crimes and claimed they were provoked by an argument with his mother.
Additionally, Sura Reyes has been ordered to pay more than a million dollars in fines, WBRE/WYOU reported.
“We’re grateful for the Columbia County District Attorney, we’re grateful for the police that have been actively involved in this case. We definitely are grateful for the outcome of this situation,” Rebecca Reese’s son, Devon Reese, said to WBRE/WYOU.
“It could definitely never replace the fact that we lost our mother, but I do feel that justice has been served,” he said.
