They say average players don't get booed so Cameron Green should take it as a compliment that he was targeted in unsavoury crowd scenes during day three of the first Ashes Test. Green's Aussies made 386 with the bat - thanks in large part to Usman Khawaja's 141 - before making the most of gloomy conditions to leave England at 2-28 before rain washed out a huge chunk of the day's play.

Australia's two wickets came in an extraordinary 20-minute spell after the first rain delay when the tourists swapped their defensive fields for a more conventional attacking approach, due to the conditions. Aussie skipper Pat Cummins grabbed the first scalp, removing Ben Duckett after a superb catch from Green, who appears to have become the newest Ashes villain in the eyes of English supporters.

Green took a contentious catch at gully to remove India's Shubman Gill in last week's World Test Championship final victory that was fiercely debated across the cricket world. On day three against England, home fans brutally reminded him about it, even if replays proved his latest beauty to remove Duckett was unquestionably legal.

Boos could be heard ringing out around Edgbaston when replays showed Green swooped low to his left and got his hands under the ball to remove Duckett for 19. The Aussie all-rounder was then subjected to chants of "cheat" bellowing out from the stands.

England's Barmy Army also took exception to s several incidents in which the Aussies appealed for chances but opted against reviewing them after not-out signals from the umpires. “Same old Aussies, always cheating,” fans sang from the Hollies Stand in a clear indication of their feelings about the Aussies.

Cam Green adds to growing list of classic catches

Boland got the other breakthrough for Australia on a rain-ravaged day three after making the most of the gloomy conditions to remove England's other opener Zak Crawley for seven - caught behind by wicketkeeper Alex Carey. However, it was Green's latest sensational grab that left viewers in awe of the Aussie fielding phenomenon, who is quickly gaining a reputation as the best gully fielder in world cricket.

Green pulled off a couple of similar wonder catches in the WTC final against India - aside from the contentious Gill incident. "What we've seen in the field is pretty special - three amazing catches, and game-changing catches as well. It's shifted the momentum towards us," Carey said on Sunday after Green's genius grab transformed the complexion of the match.

Since his Test debut, Green has only put down four catches, with his 22 takes from 26 chances giving him an almost 85% success rate bettered only by Ajinkya Rahane, of current players. Green has a habit of making extraordinary catches look simple. His latest moment of magic followed creamers to remove Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Pathum Nissanka, Jermaine Blackwood, Sarel Erwee and Rahane, making up an impressive highlight reel for the 24-year-old.

The all-rounder would have hoped to add more than his 38 runs in the first innings and solitary wicket for Australia, but his almost unrivalled fielding ability more than makes up for it and ensures that the jeers will no doubt keep coming his way from England fans during the Ashes. "An outstanding young cricketer, batting, bowling and fielding, all bases covered," Carey added in glowing praise of the West Australian prodigy.
