Donald Trump boasted that the crowd he attracted to Washington D.C. on January 6, 2021 was the "biggest" he's ever seen.
At his rally in Minden, Nevada, on Saturday night, the former president said "these corrupt people"—referring to the media—"will never take a camera and turn it around and show them how many people are here. They never do it. They're corrupt."
He promptly went on to brag about the amount of his supporters who had gathered to hear him speak on January 6, 2021, after he spent weeks pushing baseless claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election.
His supporters later stormed the U.S. Capitol in a bid to disrupt Congress' certification of President Joe Biden's victory.
But Trump's focus on Saturday night was the crowd size.
"You know the biggest crowd I've ever seen? January 6th," he said.
"And you never hear that. It was the biggest. And they were there largely to protest a corrupt and rigged and stolen election.
"It was the biggest crowd and you never hear that and you see very few pictures of it... that was the biggest crowd, I believe, I've ever spoken to."
Nevada Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, who is facing a challenge from Trump-backed Adam Laxalt, was among those who criticized Trump's comments on Twitter.
"Donald Trump just bragged about the size of the crowd at the January 6th insurrection - an attack he and Adam Laxalt fueled by pushing the Big Lie," Cortez Mastro wrote. "And Adam Laxalt stood onstage and praised him."
Progressive political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen wrote that Trump was "bragging about summoning insurrectionists, in case Susan Collins is wondering whether he's learned his lesson."
Brian Klaas, an associate professor of global politics at University College London, wrote: "'I don't get enough credit for the crowd size in the insurrection I incited' is the outgrowth of a deranged, narcissistic, authoritarian mind. He may be out of formal power, but Trump is still incredibly dangerous for American democracy."
Meanwhile, the House committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol has scheduled its next hearing for October 13.
The panel has not yet provided an agenda, but Rep. Adam Schiff said recently that the hearing would "tell the story about a key element of Donald Trump's plot to overturn the election."
Almost 900 people have been arrested and charged with crimes related to the attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to the Department of Justice. More than 400 have been convicted.
Newsweek has contacted a spokesperson for Trump for comment.
