The Southwestern Regional Commission and the State of Franklin held the annual Senior Celebration for community members 60 and older this past Thursday at the Smoky Mountain Event Park on Hyatt Creek Road.

The tradition started with a group event by Tsali Manor held 1991-2016, then was brought back by the Southwestern Commission with the Qualla Boundary with seven western counties’ senior centers involved, according to the State of Franklin Executive Director Lisa Loftis. Beginning in 2018, it was held for two years at the Ramsey Center. This year is the first normal year back from the pandemic years and the event seemed as popular as ever. The goal of the gathering is to be a social event where everyone can gather together and share their time.

Attendees were treated to catering from Granny’s Kitchen, fun activities, booths and door prizes. The event was moved from Friday to Thursday due to possible bad weather coming in from Hurricane Ian.

“We were really happy with the turnout, despite having to move the date because of the weather,” Loftis said.

Many volunteers made the day possible and they received help from Swain County.

“Want to give a big thank you to all of the volunteers and people who made sure the event ran smoothly like the county maintenance, health department, EMS and Sheriff’s Department,” Loftis said.
