For a while, a third game mode for the Call of Duty League was in question. Modern Warfare had domination, Cold War had control. The games that came before the CDL offered third game modes, giving 2022 a unique and challenging outlook.
Eventually control was announced as the final mode to pair with two hardpoint and two search and destroy maps, but there were even rumors that some form of Warzone could be played.
Atlanta FaZe star Chris “Simp” Lehr said he and his squad wanted to scrimmage control before most other teams were willing. The majority of the CDL started practicing the third mode, which only has two maps and debuted at the Kickoff Classic, two weeks before the preseason event.
Atlanta started a little sooner.
“We played once against Paris and nobody else really wanted to,” Lehr said.
There were exciting moments and highlight plays that came out of control, but the mode could use work before operating smoothly for pro play.
Control is a round-based mode in which the attacking team attempts to capture two separate objectives on the map in the allotted time, with both offense and defense starting with 30 lives each round. Right now one side has a significant advantage.
‘It’s not in the best state. It’s playable, but barely in my opinion,” Lehr said. “With the map pool we have right now it’s really tough for control to be really good because you just get spawn tripped on offense.”
Gavutu and Tuscan are the only control maps right now, which is problematic because the amount of maps that are usable for the CDL in Vanguard is already limited in the other modes too.
Pros weren’t satisfied with how spawns function, because offensive teams had a tough go at winning rounds. The CDL season starts Feb. 4, so the clock is ticking to get the mode in a healthy state.
“The two maps we are playing are mostly defensive, so it’s really hard to win offensive rounds,” OpTic head coach Ray “Rambo” Lussier said. “Getting on the point and trying to capture it in a lot of cases doesn’t do much for you because you spawn so far away. It’s definitely playable, and I think with a couple tweaks we can make it a fun game mode to watch.”
OpTic Texas won its control map against the Los Angeles Thieves in a 3-1 loss on Jan. 22. OpTic SMG player Anthony “Shotzzy” Cuevas-Castro agreed with Lussier that the spawns posed a dilemma for attacking teams.
“It kind of ruins everything because when you are spawning that deep, all the defense has to do is get a full set of kills and then, boom, offense is spawn trapped in the back,” Cuevas-Castro said.
For Minnesota Rokkr SMG player Eli “Standy” Bentz, control was just something he and his team would have to accept and get used to. Bentz even said he was starting to like it a bit more. He suggested Bocage could be used as a third map for control, if the CDL really needed it to be.
The biggest issue right now with control is the defense’s ability to spawn trap the offense, which could be prevalent on Bocage as well considering how that map plays in hardpoint.
Bentz’ solution? Don’t get trapped.
“I think most teams have found out the way they don’t want to get spawn trapped,” Bentz said. “It all comes from not making mistakes to get yourself in that position. Then coming out of spawns you just have to make a smart decision and not waste lives.”
The CDL has their third game mode, but teams aren’t completely sold on how it functions yet. The league has a little over a month before Major I for any remedies.
