The University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team opened the 2022 regular season on a high note as the team defeated both No. 9 Iowa and UCLA on Monday afternoon in Maturi Pavilion.The Gophers posted a 196.900 team score, Iowa finished in second place with 195.950 and UCLA was in third after scoring 194.850.
Notable
In attendance to cheer the Maroon and Gold on to victory were 3,887 fans, a new regular season meet record. The previous attendance record was 3,112, set when Minnesota hosted Arizona State on March 3, 2018.
Minnesota's victory marks the first win over UCLA in program history.
Alongside Monday's meet, Minnesota hosted a Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. Prior to the meet, both the University of Minnesota and UCLA gymnastics teams held educational sessions to inspire athletes to be informed agents of change. The theme of these sessions was 'activism and athletics in the shadow of MLK's legacy." Educational programming at the meet created an opportunity for all teams and fans to begin the journey of becoming informed agents of change in the space of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice.

"It was just an incredible start for our team," head coach Jenny Hansen said. "This is exactly what we were looking for to get the season going. The fans were incredible, the energy was amazing and it was just a fun experience all around. I am really proud of the team and how we handled everything. We are looking forward to the opportunity to do it again next Monday against Michigan."
"Having the fans back at the Pav with us just means so much," Lexy Ramler said. "I was nervous just because it was my last, first meet. It meant a lot to me, personally."
"It was amazing to have the fans back," Mya Hooten said. "It was so much fun. I feel like it helped me have more energy. Every time I would land, the crowd would scream and that felt so good."
All-Around
Ramler won the all-around title with a score of 39.700. Her top tallies of the night came on bars and beam, where she recorded a 9.950 on each apparatus.
Ona Loper finished second in the all-around competition, led by her 9.950 on vault.
Event Breakdown
Vault
Minnesota started the afternoon on vault with the Gophers posting a team score of 49.175. Ona Loper led the Gophers when she posted a 9.950 to earn the event title. Ramler added a 9.875, while Maddie Quarles posted a 9.825. Hooten scored a 9.775 and Kate Grotenhuis rounded out the top five at 9.750.
Bars
The Maroon and Gold combined for a team score of 49.275 on bars. Ramler was the event title winner with a 9.950 to pave the way. A trio of Gophers in Hooten, Loper and Hannah Willmarth added scores of 9.850, while Halle Remlinger followed with a 9.775.
Beam
The Gophers posted a team beam score of 49.075 on Monday afternoon. Ramler claimed her second event title of the night with a 9.950 on the apparatus. Loper achieved a 9.875 and Abbie Nylin joined her teammate at 9.875, setting a new career-best score. Emily Koch earned a 9.800 and freshman Lauren Peal made her collegiate debut with a 9.575.
Floor
Minnesota's 49.375 on floor exercise solidified the victory. Lexy Ramler added the Gophers' best score on the event with a 9.925, earning her third event title. Hooten debuted a new floor routine that received a 9.900. Loper, who anchored the event, Koch and Remlinger finished off the rotation with a trio of 9.850s.

Minnesota welcomes Michigan to Maturi Pavilion to take on the reigning national champions on Monday, January 24 at 7:00 pm. The meet will be featured on the Big Ten Network.
