Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown is no longer with the team after suddenly exiting Sunday's game against the New York Jets in the third quarter, coach Bruce Arians announced postgame. Brown took off his uniform and threw his undershirt into the stands before leaving the field.
"He is no longer a Buc," Arians told reporters, declining to offer further details on the incident. "I'm not talking about it."
In the middle of the Buccaneers' third-quarter touchdown drive, Brown appeared frustrated on the sidelines. He pulled off his uniform and shoulder pads as teammate Mike Evans tried to calm him down. Brown's meltdown continued and he took off his undershirt and gloves, throwing them to the crowd sitting behind the Bucs' bench.
Before he left the field, a shirtless Brown stood in the Jets' end zone and waved his arms to pump up the crowd. On the broadcast, Fox sideline reporter Jen Hale reported security thought Brown was a shirtless fan running onto the field and approached him before realizing it was Brown.
Arians told Fox's Jay Glazer that Brown refused to enter the game, at which point Arians told him to leave.
Brown's outburst comes two weeks after coach Arians said he was sticking with the wide receiver following Brown's three-game suspension for submitting a fake vaccine card. The decision seemed to contradict a statement Arians made when the team signed Brown in 2020 that essentially said Tampa Bay had the former Pro Bowler on a one-strike policy.
"I could give a shit what they think," Arians said when asked about possible criticism of giving Brown a second chance.
Brown had three receptions for 26 yards before going to the locker room. The Buccaneers went on to beat the Jets 28-24 with Tom Brady's game-winning 33-yard touchdown pass to Cyril Grayson with 15 seconds remaining on the clock.
"That's obviously a difficult situation," Brady said about Brown postgame. "We all love him and care about him deeply. ... I think everyone should be compassionate and empathetic toward some very difficult things."
