Alabama’s game Saturday against Ole Miss, as coach Nick Saban noted in the preceding days, was the school’s first against an SEC opponent in a full-capacity Bryant-Denny Stadium since LSU in November 2019.
As such, Saban wanted the home crowd to bring it. He delivered a challenge to fans to use a Sept. 25 game against Southern Miss as “practice,” then harped on the same point the Thursday night before the Rebels arrived.
“I will tell you this: the crowd can have an impact on the game,” he said during his weekly radio show. It makes it more difficult for the offense to check. It affects their cadence if there’s a lot of noise.
“This has to be something that’s relentless and every play. It can’t be every now and then. You want the players to play every play in the game. I’m trying to get them to focus on every play in the game -- even if it was a bad play the play before, focus on the next play. The fans have to do the same thing. You have to make every play in the game tough on the quarterback.”
The announced attendance of 100,007 fans Saturday passed their test.
“I thought it was a great crowd today,” Saban said after the 42-21 win. “I thought really they’re part of the team and they certainly deserve credit for part of the win. They did their part and I’m really pleased and happy about that.”
Ole Miss committed two false start penalties in the first half.
“I think [crowd noise] was a huge factor,” Saban said. “It makes it difficult for them to communicate.”
Rebels coach Lane Kiffin said there was “somewhat” of an impact from crowd noise.
“I didn’t feel like we had a lot of crowd-noise issues where we had a lot of false starts going on but I’m sure it was an impact,” he said.
