Daily Scripture

Galatians 5:22-23a

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

2 Peter 1:5-6a (NIV)

You must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control.

Matthew 5:5 (NRSV)

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Matthew 25:19-21 (NIV)

After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’ “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’”

A popular saying (or philosophy of living, if you will) is, “No Regrets.” It's a delightful thought, but the truth is that I have many regrets. I have asked for forgiveness for these, and I don’t let them ruin my ability to live in the present, but I would jump at the opportunity to redo some of hurtful things I've said to people I love.

Natalie Seale writes, “If we think about gentleness in terms of its opposites, we find that it is countered by a desire for revenge, a sense of self-importance, or the expression of anger.” Many times when my responses have not been gentle, it has been because I've felt wronged and have wanted some kind of revenge. Other times it has been because I feel disrespected and have responded with that same tone of disrespect.

When I take my hurts to God, God can soothe those wounds (sometimes it takes a while) and I can lean into love and grace instead of retribution.

I regret the times I act out in anger. Those responses are not gentle, and they show that I have lost self-control, my ability to manage my emotions and actions, which I alone am responsible for. The more time I spend faithfully in prayer with God, the more I feel in control of myself. I feel less of a desire to say something cutting, and can respond instead with gentleness to my loved ones, even after a long day.

This week we are encouraged to pray that the soil of our hearts will be a place the fruit of the spirit can grow mightily. May your hearts and souls be overflowing with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Dear Jesus,

Thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit and the opportunity to experience the fruit of the Spirit. We know we cannot spend time in your presence and remain unchanged.

We invite your sprit to bloom in our hearts.

Amen.
