Officials with the Paris Police Department are investigating after an animal control officer was seen shooting a dog with a gun in the street.

On Oct. 15, a City of Paris Animal Control Officer found what the department is calling a feral dog who had allegedly been eluding the department for several years.

“Animal Control officers had attempted on numerous past occasions to catch the dog with traps and tranquilizer darts,” said Paris Police Department Information Officer Curtis Garrett. “The dog continued to elude capture and, because of this, when the dog was located and again attempted to elude the officer, as a last resort he shot the dog.”

Wounded, the dog continued to elude capture by the officer and was finally found at a home nearby.

“As with any discharge of a firearm by department personnel, the Paris Police Department is reviewing this incident and applicable policies as a result,” Garrett added.
