AMHERST – A Springfield man accused of threatening people with an illegally-owned gun in an area crowded with college-age students is scheduled to be arraigned in court on a variety of charges Monday morning.

Carlos Vazquez, 21, of Union Street, was arrested early Saturday morning and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a large-capacity firearm and possession of ammunition without a permit, said Amherst Police Lt. William N. Menard.

Police were called to 83 Nutting Ave. at about 12:19 a.m. for reports of a firearm being shown and gunshots heard in the area, he said.

“Officers observed a chaotic scene in which college-age individuals were seen fleeing the area,” he said.

Witnesses offered a description of the suspect and police stopped Vazquez nearby as he was driving from the area. Officers found a 9 mm handgun in his possession after the traffic stop, Menard said.

He is being held at the Hampshire County House of Correction and is expected to be arraigned in Eastern Hampshire District Court, he said.

The crime remains under investigation. There were no injuries and it is believed the gun was not discharged, he said.
