Since The Federal Bureau Of Control deals with all manner of supernatural phenomena that could theoretically possess the internet and cause utter chaos, its scientists have to rely on old technology to perform their tests and experiments. Rotary phones, CRT computer screens, reel-to-reel recording devices, and other obsolete devices are the only instruments allowed inside in order to prevent beings; such as Control's main antagonist force, The Hiss — from destroying the world.
One such piece of ancient technology that Control's protagonist, Jesse Faden, runs into during her on-the-job training as the new director of the FBC is a punch card system security system. It's a confusing series of codes that need to be entered to start up the HRA machine in Dr. Darling's lab. Thankfully, we know the solution so you can get past this section and continue your fight against The Hiss.
How To Reach The HRA Lab
During the Old Boys Club mission, you'll run into the FBC's head of operations, Helen Marshal, in the Luck And Probability department. Speak with her and she'll tell you that she needs to produce more HRAs — the devices that prevent FBC agents from being possessed by The Hiss — in Dr. Darling's lab.
Once that conversation is done, head through the door past her into the Ritual Division where Marshall's rangers are fighting off The Hiss. Kill every Hiss enemy and when you attempt to cleanse the control point, you'll be attacked by Parakinesiology Chief Lewis, a not too difficult mini-boss. Use your Launch ability to take out his shield and then blast him with your Service Weapon. Now you can cleanse the control point with no further interruptions.
Now head forward towards the Protective Studies department. Head down the hallway and you'll find a wall with a monitor in the middle of it that looks like this:
There's a paper next to the monitor with a hexagonal shape on it. You need to match the same shape that's on the paper, which is done by rotating the object in the middle and filling in the hexagon. Fiddle with the monitor until it matches the paper and that will open up the entrance to Darling's lab.
How To Solve The Punch Card Puzzle
Try to activate the HRA Machine and you'll notice that it won't work. Marshall will tell you that Darling had some kind of system that he used to turn the machine on.
You'll need to gather up each of the punchcards first. They aren't hard to find as they're big, yellow cards that can be found around the lab. There's also a stairway that leads to a yellow-walled room above that you'll need to check as well. Once you've gathered all of the cards you'll need to input them into various terminals. There are five terminals that each have a number written on the side of them.
Look around and you'll see several whiteboards. These give you the solution to this punch card puzzle. The way the answers are written are a little unorthodox, so here's how they're supposed to go:
This whiteboard shows you which card goes into the first and fourth terminals.
Notice the arrows under the second and third hexagons? That means these two images need to be reversed. So the hexagon that has the fully filled-in middle goes into the second terminal while the other goes into the third terminal.
By process of elimination, you can probably figure out where the last punchcard goes, but this whiteboard shows you which card goes into the fifth and final terminal.
Once you input the punchcards in the correct order, interact with the HRA Machine again and you'll be done with Dr. Darling's lab and its silly security system.
