San Diego police flooded Barrio Logan Monday night after one person was killed in Chicano Park, where a crowd threw rocks and bottles at responding officers, police said.
Police responded to a report that someone had been shot in the park about 10:10 p.m. They found a male victim, but it was unclear if he had been shot or stabbed, Officer John Buttle said.
Medics started CPR on the victim and took him to a hospital, Buttle said. The victim, whose age was not immediately available, later died.
No suspects were in police custody.
After the crowd threw rocks and bottles at officers, they called for backup. Police deployed officers equipped with helmets and other riot gear.
Police gave the crowd orders to disperse in English and Spanish, and officers armed with pepper-ball launchers advanced in a line to push the group back, according to scanner traffic. About 11:40 p.m., police said the scene was “secure.”
There were no reports of arrests in the crowd. No further information was immediately available.
