RAPID CITY, S.D. — Anne’s impact in the state is making a difference for children in the foster care system.
Anne Chung McGovern, Wendy’s Wonderful Kids Recruiter & CHS Adoption Specialist, says, “I am an adoption social worker and for me it was a really natural career path. I’m an adoptee myself, so it’s something that I’m naturally passionate about. I’ve been working in the adoption field my entire career, so about 12 years and with children home for about 7.”
Wendy’s Wonderful Kids, the signature program of the Dave Thomas Foundation, works with children who have been in foster care the longest, including teenagers, children with special needs and sibling group – essentially more barriers to permanency. Recruiters, like Anne, try to find the right family for every child.
Anne adds, “And is just takes one healthy, connected relationship with an adult, for those kids to to be on that path, they’re already resilient. We empower them to find their voices to become a part of their adoption plans. Tell us who you feel connected with and really the goal of Wendy’s too is we start within their familiar circles of friends, family, safe neighbors, their school communities, people who already have hearts for these children”
Anne has the ability to drive both missions of Children’s Home Society and Wendy’s Wonderful Kids and guide youth through the process of adoption by forming a relationship and instilling hope.
“It can set them on a different path so then, we’re changing our communities for when they become adults. Hopefully they’re safe, healthy, strong, hopeful,” says Anne.
She believes in setting them up for a successful future but she says it starts with giving them a home, saying, “The main thing they need is commitment. They don’t need perfect parents. They need parents who are going to stick with them forever through those hard times and the challenging the challenge, the challenges, the highs, the lows. And really, you know the goal of Wendy’s is to prevent youth from having to age out of foster care.”
Anne’s commitment to her role as an adoption specialists is one she takes to heart and adds, “Every youth deserves a family and a sense of permanency, and really no child should be deemed un-adoptable. Every child is adoptable. We believe un-adoptable is unacceptable.”
Each year, only three recruiters win the coveted Recruiter of the Year award, out of more than 600.
