A wildfire that burned two stacks of hay bales near Berthoud was brought under control Saturday with no structures damaged and no injuries reported, according to Berthoud’s Fire Protection District.
At 2:48 p.m. on Friday, crews were dispatched to a fire in the 2000 block of County Road 46, a press release said. Upon arrival, firefighters found one of three stacks of 1-ton hay bales on fire and began attack operations.
While the property owner assisted with a loader to move hay bales, a second stack of bales also burned, as winds gusted up to 30 miles per hour.
A water shuttle operation was established to ensure adequate water was available for fighting the fire.
Nine engines responded, including units from Loveland and Front Range Fire Rescue. Gopher Excavating also helped with excavator work to break down hay bales, allowing crews to find and extinguish hot spots.
Crews from Berthoud traded shifts throughout the night and continued to fight the fire until they finally cleared at about 5 a.m. Saturday.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
