PEORIA (HOI) -- People in Illinois can soon get hormonal birth control without seeing a doctor. One local doctor said this can set health care back.
Governor Pritzker signed that bill Thursday.
Dr. Tracy Bochantin, Peoria OBGYN, believes there are more cons than pros to this bill.
"I think it's a very dangerous thing especially for women, and I think it's setting healthcare back in time, than moving it forward," said Dr. Bochantin.
She said without proper counseling from a doctor, people may not know which option of birth control is best for them.
"You can have some pretty serious consequences, including heart attack, stroke, unwanted pregnancy, which we're actually trying to prevent an ectopic pregnancy," said Dr. Bochantin.
Pritzker said this bill was signed to make birth control more accessible for people, but Dr. Bochantin said for the most part, it already is accessible.
"If you can find a way to go to the pharmacy, it shouldn't be any more difficult to go to a doctor than it is to go to the grocery store," said Dr. Bochantin.
To make sure prices are affordable, the bill requires insurance policies regulated by the state to cover the cost from the pharmacy.
Illinois is now the second state in the Midwest to authorize it.
One woman was passionate about the bill, but thought people should be educated on birth control options.
"It's amazing cause I feel like girls will be more comfortable going out, getting protected," said Peoria resident, Katlyn Mabis.
Dr. Bochantin still encouraged people to talk to a doctor, but if the did not, research the options beforehand.
"I would also suggest they take advantage of the pharmacist because he's there. I think that's going to be their best opportunity," said Dr. Bochantin.
Under this law, pharmacists will be required to receive training on how to help people with their birth control options.
The bill goes into effect January 2022.
