It's been eight months since a shooting outside the Wake County Sheriff's Office in downtown Raleigh.
The shots were fired into a small crowd, which sent people running for cover.
While no one was injured in the shooting, signs of the shooting remain at the building with boarded up windows that were busted out.
The shots were fired from a moving car on Salisbury Street.
Surveillance video from the shooting obtained by WRAL News showed people walking and riding scooters outside the building.
Then, a white minivan pulls onto Salisbury Street -- and the peace was shattered by gunfire.
A dozen people, including some deputies, can be seen ducking for cover.
But just moments after this white minivan pulls onto Salisbury Street — the peace is shattered by gunfire.
About a dozen people - including some deputies - can be seen ducking for cover.
Two women clutched onto each other, as people flooded into the sheriff's office and dropped to the ground in panic.
"People were getting down and getting low -- trying to keep from getting shot," recounted Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker.
Baker was inside the sheriff's office when the shooting happened. He said he heard 12 shots that came from the passenger side of the white van.
"It could have went terribly wrong and been a lot worse out there on that day," said Baker. "It's just the grace of God that nobody got struck by a bullet."
Deputies arrested Willie Hayes Jr. about an hour after the shooting. He was charged with attempted first-degree murder and remains at Wake County Detention Center.
Hayes' girlfriend, who was in the driver's seat during the shooting, told WRAL News in October that she had just ended the their relationship and pleaded with him to calm down.
"He said, 'Shut up and drive ... shut up,'" the woman told WRAL News.
Baker said he believes Hayes had a mental breakdown, but added that Hayes' decision to shoot was calculated and deserved serious punishment.
“It was a really dangerous situation; a very careless situation where you are putting the lives of innocent people in jeopardy," added Baker.
District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said her office is still gathering information to prosecute this case.
Meanwhile, Baker said he is hoping the damage at the Wake County Sheriff's Office will be fixed soon. He has requested bulletproof doors be installed as added protection.
