JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. -- Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves loosened crowd size restrictions in Mississippi as his state’s COVID-19 numbers continue to drop and vaccinations rise, with more than half a million people now fully vaccinated.

Reeves on Wednesday extended a previously-issued executive order, but amended it to allow up to 75 percent of capacity at indoor venues, including college arenas. It also allows K-12 events to reach up to 50 percent of capacity.

According to the Mississippi Department of Health, another 80,000 people became fully vaccinated in the last week, bringing that total to 506,082. Overall, more than 1.2 million doses of COVID vaccine have been administered across the state, including 142,942 doses on the Mississippi coast, representing 11.3% of the statewide total.

In Jackson County, another 4,613 doses were administered this week, bringing the total to 52,208. Harrison County now totals 76,480 doses after another 8,666 were administered.

While vaccinations continue to rise, the number of new cases of COVID-19 continue to drop rapidly. There were 1,491 new cases reported statewide over the past seven days, down from 1,894 the week prior. The 53 deaths reported were identical to the previous week.

Jackson County had 57 new cases of COVID and two deaths reported, down from 59 and four, respectively, the week prior. On Monday, there were no cases or deaths reported in the county for the first time in roughly a year. Jackson County now totals 13,042 cases and 242 deaths.

Harrison County enjoyed an even bigger drop, with 84 new cases, down from 116. For the second week in a row, only one COVID-19 death was reported in the county, which now totals 17,397 cases and 299 deaths.

The Mississippi totaled 176 new cases, down from 224 the previous week, with three deaths, down from seven. COVID-19 deaths on the coast have dropped by 85 percent in the past month. The coast now totals 34,129 cases and 629 deaths.

Other data from the MDH shows hospitalizations for COVID also continue to drop. As of Friday, there were 195 people hospitalized with COVID statewide, with 61 of those in intensive care. Both numbers are decreases from a week ago, when there were 243 people hospitalized statewide and 80 of those in ICU.

The numbers are even better in Jackson County, where Singing River Hospital and Ocean Springs Hospital reported a combined total of four COVID patients, none in ICU.

The MDH now considers 292,872 Mississippians recovered from COVID-19, with 5,778 known active cases -- a 13.4% drop from this time last week, when there were 6,675 active cases.

Total testing stands at 2,610,281, with 25,042 tests conducted in the past week, while the positive rate continues to remain steady at 11.7%.
