FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) -- Second Amendment supporters say they think President Biden's executive orders could be the start of a slippery slope to take away their right to bear arms.

Meanwhile, gun control advocates say the orders are a good start.

"It just increases the burder on law-abiding citizens, and makes it more difficult for them to exercise their Constitutional rights," said ZX Gun's Phil Jones.

Jones says business has been brisk the past two years, but especially the past few weeks as President Biden has outlined his plans for gun control.

"Every time we see discussions like this it creates a spike in demand." he said.

Customers are buying firearms, ammunition, and accessories they believe could be banned or curtailed if laws change.

Gun owner Skyler Russell says he can't get his head around one of Biden's executive orders to tighten regulations for "ghost guns," which are made at home using parts without serial numbers.

"Every gun that I've ever bought has a serial number on it. I've had to get a background check done. So the whole 'ghost gun' thing doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. To me it just doesn't make any sense to implement more laws for the people like us, the people in here trying to buy guns legally," he said.

Biden also wants to enhance regulations on braces for pistols, which Jones says won't stop criminals from shooting people.

"At the end of the day it's not just about somebody kicking in your front door and protecting yourself from bad guys in the neighborhood, it's about being able to protect yourself from oppressive government overreach," Jones added.

"The things that President Biden is talking about is really to have laws to catch up with technology," said former Fort Wayne Mayor Paul Helmke, who also served for years as the head of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

He says gun control used to be a bi-partisan issue, with republican heavyweights like presidents reagan and george h-w bush, as well as former new york mayor rudy giuliani backing those measures.

"We pass laws for a number of reasons. One, it really does discourage a lot of bad people from doing bad things. Secondly, it sends the message that this is not what we want in our society. And third, it gives us something we can arrest people on because there's a law on the books. t's not about taking away anyone's guns, it's making us all safer. That's the crucial issue," Helmke said.

Other gun control measures will likely require congressional approval, where chances of passing are slim.
