A right-wing activist who fired paintballs toward a crowd of opposing demonstrators last month in downtown Portland has been arrested, records show.
Alan Swinney, a 50-year-old supporter of President Donald Trump, is being held in the Multnomah County Detention Center on suspicion of a dozen criminal counts, including accusations of felony assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
He was booked into jail Wednesday morning and is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, according to records.
Details of Swinney’s arrest weren’t immediately clear. A secret indictment was filed in the case Sept. 11.
The indictment alleges Swinney used a paintball gun and mace — or a similar substance — during downtown Portland demonstrations last month. It also alleges he pointed a revolver at someone during one of the demonstrations.
The Oregonian/OregonLive photographed Swinney pointing the paintball gun toward a crowd of antifascist or Black Lives Matter protesters on Aug. 22.
Swinney was then seen — and captured on video — shooting the paintball gun.
He also was seen pointing what appeared to be a firearm at the crowd, but he did not shoot.
Several of his allegations stem from the Aug. 22 incident, for which he’s already facing a $250,000 lawsuit from a woman who says she was hurt by a paintball he fired.
Swinney is also named in a second, $1.25 million lawsuit alongside two other men. That lawsuit references the Aug. 22 clash, along with another incident Aug. 15.
A plaintiff who attended rallies in Portland as a counter-protester claimed Swinney is among those who sprayed bear mace at her during the earlier incident.
Swinney has described himself on social media as a conservative and a Trump supporter. Records indicate he lives in Texas.
KATU (2) first reported Swinney had been booked into jail.
