The National Football League (NFL) has developed ‘club specific audio pallets’ for each franchise to use due to the absence of most fans in stadia for the 2020 season.

Although some teams are permitting reduced capacity attendance at their stadia when the season starts on 10th September, the pre-recorded crowd noise is being made available to all NFL franchises to play on a continuous loop via their PA systems.

The league has, however, laid out strict guidelines around the use of the artificial crowd noise. In a memo issued to all teams, the NFL stipulates that any club attempting to manipulate the crowd noise will be subject to fines, suspensions or potential lost draft picks.

The audio must not be played at 70 decibels (dB), no higher or lower, and start from kick off. Noise levels will be monitored by the NFL throughout the game to ensure that crowd noise does not go above or below that level.

In part, the NFL memo read: ‘NFL Football Operations will monitor stadium audio throughout every games to ensure compliance with the policies. Decibel readings will be taken from the sidelines by the league-appointed game day assistant.’

Adding: ‘In order to properly monitor compliance of the approved decibel level, each club must submit the point of contact who is accountable for overseeing audio being played in the stadium.’

The move sees the NFL follow other sports properties by incorporating artificial crowd noise into its live games. However, using in venue audio is a different approach to that taken by European soccer’s top competitions, which included artificial crowd noise as part of live broadcasts.

With the NFL nearing the start of the heavily disrupted 2020 season, domestic broadcast partner NBC Sports has confirmed advertising sales for the high-profile kick off game between the Houston Texans and 2019 Super Bowl champions the Kansas City Chiefs have been completed.

The first game of the season is always a big draw. Last year’s opener between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears was the third highest-rated prime time NFL broadcast of the season, according to Sportico, scoring 22.1 million viewers.

With the 30-second slots during NBC’s regular season broadcasts reportedly being sold for between US$640,000 and north of US$800,000, the network’s 19 primetime NFL windows brought in more than US$762 million in ad sale revenue last season, according to Standard Media Index.
